June

Richard Paul, Mud and Milk and All That is Liquid

Each Friday in June we will be showing two 3D films by artist, photographer and filmmaker, Richard Paul. Paul’s work is being screened in relation to the Patrick Heron exhibition, linking to the artist’s strong use of colour and to an emphasis on the rewards from looking – identifying repeated motifs and lyrical movements between subjects throughout the films. The work is being screened in the Foyle studio – viewable with 3D glasses.

Mud and Milk uses found 3D slides from the 1940s-60s and highlights the close association between the materiality of mud, milk, chocolate and paint (particularly for children). Mud and Milk riffs on amateur slide shows, Sesame Street and Public Information Films, and has been brought to you by the colour orange, the circle and the letter O.

All That is Liquid takes its initial inspiration from a photograph Paul's father (a merchant seaman) took of a Crossing the Line ceremony in 1951; this ceremony is enacted whenever a ship crosses the equator. Paul recreated the picture, which appears halfway through the video; this becomes the fulcrum of a rumination on male bonding initiations, salt water corrosion, delirium and reflexive considerations of the production of 3D space (with the help of Henry Moore).

In Conversation: Friday 8 June, 15:00

Richard Paul will be in conversation with Melanie Stidolph, Learning Curator, Tate St Ives about his work, the importance of voiceovers and soundtracks and the development of his 3D work and expanded practice, taking in music, still photography, album covers and lenticular photography.

Richard Paul lives and works in London. He has recently exhibited at Seventeen gallery, London and at Gallery Q, Tokyo, the Centre for Fine Art Photography in Colorado and Annely Juda, London. He has had two solo exhibitions at Theodore Art, New York, You might find yourself, 2013 and Compound Noun, 2011, and the exhibition I was a teenage hand model at Seventeen, 2009. http://www.richardgpaul.co.uk/
