About Festival of Ideas: Goldie

Artist and drum ’n’ bass musician Goldie discusses his career and creative practice with journalist Nihal Arthanayake.

Today, Goldie is best known as a musician, but he began his creative life in the 1980s in the United States as a successful graffiti artist. Originally from the West Midlands, he returned to England in the early 1990s where he became one of the pioneers of a revolutionary new electronic sound – drum ‘n’ bass – originating from the jungle and rave scenes of the time. Goldie went on to establish the record label Metalheadz and recently published his memoir, All Things Remembered, in which he lays bare the trauma of his childhood and expresses how he thinks creative expression saved his life.

In this conversation with broadcaster and journalist Nihal Arthanayake, Goldie talks about his creative practice and the relationship between his music and his visual art.
